Retired ASP Sylvanus Okon seeks justice over accumulated unpaid pension

01:56 Apr 17 2018 Lagos

1 Mr Sylvanus Okon, now a visually impaired retired Assistant Superintendent of Police, then serving in Lagos, on November 2, 1993, with other police officers, succeeded in arresting a notorious armed robber, identified as one Andrew Henry Barnabas, who was declared wanted by the Edo State Police Command.

2 Based on his gallantry, the then Lagos Police Commissioner, Marvel Akpoyibo, wrote to the Inspector-General of Police, in a letter with Ref No: CH/4650/LSKG/Vol 1/7 dated February 22, 2006, recommending Okon, then an Inspector for special promotion to the rank of ASP

3 On the strength of the letter, Okon was promoted to the rank of ASP as per force order page 115, serial No 17905 of June 2008

4 On August 1, 2013, Okon retired as ASP, without the police wireless message/signal been communicated to him, since 2008, when the promotion was effected.

Alleged injustice

A copy of the letter sent to The Inspector-General of Police in Abuja, by Olusegun Harrison & Co, legal counsel to Okon, dated March 15, 2016, stated that:

1 The pension of the retired police officer is being calculated based o his former rank of Inspector and NOT on the rank of ASP, as it should be.

2 The pay slip of Okon reflects the rank of ASP, but he is getting the pay of an Inspector.

3 The visually impaired Okon need funds urgently to access proper medical treatment and cater for his family.

4 He told this writer in confidence that there are all indications that based on the letter written by his lawyer the Inspector-General of Police, approval was gotten for his accumulated unpaid pension to be made available to him.

5 But, it is alleged that Lagos police MSS office in Oduduwa GRA, does not want to release his cheque as ordered by the IGP, for reasons best known to concerned police officers there.

Okon could be reached on: 08033214457 for further comment on the matter.
