Bribery, extortion, smuggling at Nigeria-Benin Republic border (Part 1)
Distasteful activities of smugglers at Nigeria’s porous borders have become a pain in the neck proving difficult to be curbed by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).

This investigation reveals that high rate of success of smuggling activities is being attributed to possible collusion with some Customs officers, and other law enforcement agencies including military personnel and the Police, who help to give them a “soft landing” for their illegal cargoes at checkpoints.

A quick look at this investigation reveals how the reporter travelled and crossed from Nigeria to Benin Republic but paying illegal sums of money at the immigration desk, despite having valid documents.

Through undercover, this reporter observed bribery and extortion racketeering at the border; how smuggling is a serious and flourishing business despite the heavy presence of security operatives at the border; how some foreigners stroll in and out of Nigeria unchecked/unnoticed.
